These days I perform in various configurations, as a solo act and with a variety of great artists with whom I have the privilege to play with. Playing solo is gratifying in many ways. Of course one thing is that I am not constrained to fit in with what anyone else is playing or thinking about the show. Things can change readily on the fly, whether in the flow of the performance or in the flow of a particular song or arrangement. I love to surprise myself at times by walking the tight rope at the edge of a song's structure and see what new things can emerge spontaneously. It keeps me involved and I feel like it gives my music a fresh flow every time. I do balance this with trying to stay true to what makes a song what it is and to what listeners want to hear in their familiar favorites, but I can walk this fine line more freely when it's just me letting my musical sensibilities soar.
All that being said... I also LOVE playing with the many great musicians and entertainers I have been able to play with throughout my career! People such as Moe Dixon, David Captein, Steve Christofferson, John Stowell, Carlton Jackson, Denny Bixby, Gary Ogan, Nancy Cook, Tim Mayer and Matt Cooper to name just a few! There are so many more great musicians, entertainers and friends I could list here, but suffice to say I have enjoyed them all!
"The focus for Garoutte these days has been on the profoundly personal and deeply unique composing style he has adopted and made into his own highly recognizable brand of instrumental music. Kit's compositions take you on a seemingly endless variety of rides to the furthest reaches of his muse, and always returning you home just in time for dinner."
